Service overview
Roman Blinds,
explained properly.
What it is
Roman blinds are flat panels of fabric that fold horizontally as they're raised. They give you the softness, texture and pattern of curtains in a much smaller stack, with a tailored, architectural silhouette when lowered.
Who it suits
Roman blinds suit living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms where you want fabric character without the full presence of floor-length curtains, particularly in homes with radiators, deep sills or window seats below the window.
When to commission
Commission Roman blinds when you want to soften a room without sacrificing window-sill use, when curtains would overwhelm a small space, or when you want a refined, hotel-style finish to a primary bedroom or guest room.
Why professional help matters
Poorly made Roman blinds bag in the middle, fold unevenly and fade in patches. Quality fabric, proper interlining and accurate cord-and-batten engineering are the difference between a £140 disappointment and a £380 blind you'll keep for 15 years.
What happens when it's done badly
The cost of cutting corners.
Roman blinds are the easiest fabric blind to get visibly wrong, and the cheapest examples make every flaw obvious from across the room.
Risks & consequences
- Insufficient lining means light shines through unevenly, making colours look patchy and washed out.
- Weak battens cause the folds to sag in the centre, the blind looks tired within a year.
- Unbalanced cord systems jam, fray and ultimately snap. Cheap chains are choking hazards under BS EN 13120.
- Fabric cut off-grain hangs crooked; the fault is permanent and the only fix is remaking the blind.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a heavy fabric without specifying interlining, the blind will sag immediately.
- Trying to use a Roman blind in a wet room, fabric blinds and humidity don't mix.
- Ordering in a fabric pattern that doesn't repeat cleanly across the panel.
- Specifying a chain mechanism in a child's room without a tensioned wall anchor (illegal under BS EN 13120).

Specification detail
The detail
most installers skip.
A Roman blind is fabric, lining, batten, cord, headrail and seamstress skill. The visible fabric is only the front of the story.
Materials
Linen and linen-blend fabrics
The quintessential Roman blind fabric, soft drape, natural texture, beautiful folds. Must be interlined to hold shape.
Cotton and cotton-rich weaves
Versatile, easy to clean, available in everything from plain neutrals to bold patterns.
Velvet and chenille
Luxurious, sound-absorbing, ideal for primary bedrooms. Interlining essential.
Performance fabrics
Stain-resistant, UV-stable fabrics for kitchens, dining rooms and sun-facing windows.
Lining options
Standard polycotton, blackout-coated, thermal (foil-backed), and full interlining for premium folds.
Methods & engineering
Hand sewing
Hems, cord channels and rod pockets sewn by hand for an even, premium finish, not glued or machine-stitched in bulk.
Cord and weight balancing
Cords tensioned individually to ensure the blind folds evenly across its full width.
Interlining
A soft cotton layer between fabric and lining gives the folds their characteristic body and weight.
Compliant headrails
Tensioned chain headrails with wall anchors, fully compliant with BS EN 13120 child-safety.
Variations we offer
- Standard Roman blind (5–6 folds, classic stack).
- Cascading / waterfall Romans (folds visible even when lowered).
- Soft-fold Romans (no battens, looser drape).
- Hobbled Romans (folds always visible, fixed pleats).
- Blackout-lined Romans for bedrooms.
- Interlined Romans for primary suites and formal rooms.
Where it applies
- Primary bedrooms and guest rooms requiring a warm, hotel-quality finish.
- Living rooms with radiators or window seats below the sill.
- Dining rooms where the blind acts as a feature panel of fabric.
- Small windows where curtains would overwhelm.
- Period properties where soft fabric complements the architecture better than hard blinds.
- Home offices where fabric reduces echo on video calls.
Residential vs commercial
Residential Romans focus on fabric character. Commercial Romans (hotel suites, executive offices, dental waiting rooms) add flame-retardant fabrics, contract-grade linings and reinforced cord mechanisms rated for repeated daily use.
