Service overview
Plantation Shutters,
explained properly.
What it is
Plantation shutters are interior-mounted, fixed-frame louvred panels made to the exact dimensions of each window. Wider louvres (typically 76mm or 89mm) tilt together on a hidden or visible rod, giving precise control of light, privacy and airflow without the fabric and cords of conventional blinds.
Who it suits
They suit homeowners who want a permanent, architectural finish, period properties, new-builds, bay windows, conservatories, bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens and street-facing rooms where privacy and kerb appeal both matter.
When to commission
Most clients commission shutters during a renovation, a kitchen or bathroom refit, after moving home, or when blinds and curtains start looking tired. Shutters last decades, so the right moment is whenever you're ready to stop replacing window dressings.
Why professional help matters
An ill-measured shutter sits proud of the reveal, lets in stray light around the frame, and binds when the louvres are tilted. We measure to the millimetre, specify the right frame style for your reveal depth, and account for tile reveals, radiators and window furniture before manufacture begins.
What happens when it's done badly
The cost of cutting corners.
Cheap, off-the-shelf shutter kits and pile-it-high installers cause more damage than people realise. The frame is permanent, fixing the consequences usually means starting over.
Risks & consequences
- Out-of-square frames warp the louvres within 12–18 months, leaving gaps that destroy privacy at night.
- Wrong material in a wet room (hardwood in a steam-heavy bathroom) leads to bowing, flaking paint and visible water staining inside two years.
- Inadequate tilt-rod tension means louvres droop under their own weight, a constant, visible irritation every time light moves.
- Mis-specified frame profiles leave 4–8mm sightline gaps around bay windows, undoing the entire architectural effect.
Common mistakes
- Buying shutters by louvre size alone, without matching the panel split to the window's mullion lines.
- Skipping the in-home survey and relying on customer-supplied measurements.
- Choosing the cheapest material regardless of room, MDF composite in a kitchen, hardwood in a wet bathroom.
- Accepting visible tilt rods because the installer can't fit hidden mechanisms.

Benefits
What you actually get.
Decades of life
Properly specified hardwood shutters routinely outlast three sets of blinds and curtains, typically 25+ years.
Lower heating bills
Closed louvres add a measurable insulating air layer at the window, reducing heat loss through glazing by up to 50%.
Genuine privacy
Unlike net curtains and blinds, you can tilt the upper louvres for light while keeping the lower half fully closed to the street.
Safety in family homes
No cords, no pull strings, no choking hazards, fully compliant with BS EN 13120 child-safety standards.
Higher property value
Estate agents in Greater Manchester consistently report shuttered rooms photograph better and accelerate viewings.
Quiet, calm operation
Engineered hinges and tensioned tilt rods open and close in silence, no rattling at the first gust of wind.
Specification detail
The detail
most installers skip.
Plantation shutters are not a single product. The right specification depends on your window, your room and how you live in it. Below is the detail most installers won't talk you through.
Materials
Paulownia Plus hardwood
Our premium lightweight hardwood, super strong with a beautifully smooth painted finish. The default for living rooms, bedrooms and bay windows. Resists warping and is the only material we recommend for large panels above 800mm wide.
Basswood hardwood
A popular hardwood choice, strong and reliable with a flawless painted finish. Excellent for traditional sash windows and full-house orders where a uniform painted look is wanted.
Pine softwood
A solid, sustainable softwood option with natural grain and a timeless cottage appeal. Ideal where stained finishes are preferred.
MDF composite
Engineered wood with a polypropylene wrap. Cost-effective for plain, painted finishes in dry rooms, typically 20–30% less than hardwood. Not suitable for bathrooms or south-facing conservatories.
Waterproof PVC / ABS
100% waterproof and ideal for bathrooms, en-suites, kitchens, wet rooms and coastal homes. Won't warp, crack or fade and looks identical to painted hardwood from across the room.
Methods & engineering
Slat sizes
Three louvre widths: 63mm for a traditional look, 76mm as the most popular all-rounder, and 89mm for larger windows where wider slats give a clearer view and more light.
Tilt options
Internal (hidden) tilt for clean, modern sightlines; centre tilt for the classic plantation look; or off-set tilt where the rod sits to one side.
Frame profiles
L-frame as standard for shallow reveals, Z-frame for masonry reveals with no architrave (reveal-fit), or decorative frames for period bay windows. The right frame is chosen at your in-home survey.
Finishes & colours
Pure White, Silk White, Ivory, Light Oak, Dark Oak and Anthracite Grey as standard, plus bespoke colour-match on Paulownia Plus and Basswood.
Panel configuration
Single panel, bi-fold, tri-fold, tracked or full bay, chosen to match your window's natural divisions and the way you open it.
Mid-rail divider
A horizontal cross-rail allowing the upper and lower louvres to operate independently, essential for street-facing rooms.
Variations we offer
- Full-height plantation shutters, most common, single panel from sill to head.
- Tier-on-tier, two stacked panels that open independently, ideal for Victorian sashes.
- Café-style, covering only the lower half, popular in kitchens and dining rooms.
- Solid panel, louvre-free panels for traditional cottage windows and box-bay seats.
- Tracked shutters, for patio doors, dressing rooms and ultra-wide openings.
- Shaped shutters, arches, gables, circles, angled bays.
Where it applies
- Victorian and Edwardian terraces with deep reveals and sash windows.
- New-build estates across Rochdale, Oldham and Manchester with shallow uPVC reveals.
- Conservatories needing thermal control and UV blocking.
- Bay windows requiring 3, 5 or 7-panel configurations.
- Bathrooms and en-suites where moisture rules out fabric blinds.
- Bedrooms where blackout and security are joint priorities.
Residential vs commercial
Residential shutters prioritise finish quality, hinge colour and silent operation. Commercial shutters in offices, dental surgeries and hospitality (we fit both) emphasise BS EN compliance, fire-retardant finishes, durability against repeated daily use and easy cleaning.
