Service overview

Roller Blinds,
explained properly.

What it is

Roller blinds are a single piece of fabric wound around a spring-loaded or chain-controlled tube. They give you clean lines, total light control (when blackout-lined) and the widest fabric library of any window dressing, at a fraction of the cost of shutters.

Who it suits

Roller blinds suit almost every room, bedrooms, lounges, kitchens, home offices and rentals, wherever you want a discreet, practical, well-finished window covering without the commitment or budget of shutters.

When to commission

Most clients fit roller blinds when moving in, refurbishing a single room, replacing failed cheap kit blinds, or adding blackout to a nursery or bedroom. They're also the standard go-to for landlords refitting between tenancies.

Why professional help matters

DIY roller blinds from the high street are cut to nearest-10mm and brackets are screwed where they happen to land. We measure to the millimetre, balance the brackets to the window's true geometry, and use child-safe mechanisms that comply with BS EN 13120, a legal requirement in homes with under-15s.

What happens when it's done badly

The cost of cutting corners.

Cheap roller blinds fail in the same predictable ways. The fabric is the smallest part of the problem.

Risks & consequences

  • Wrongly tensioned springs cause the blind to creep down by 30–50mm a day, requiring constant readjustment.
  • Non-compliant looped chains create a documented strangulation hazard, banned in homes with children under BS EN 13120.
  • Cheap fabrics fade unevenly in south-facing windows within 18 months, leaving visible high-water marks across the panel.
  • Brackets fixed into plaster instead of timber pull through within a year of daily use.

Common mistakes

  • Measuring the glass instead of the recess (or the reveal instead of the face fix).
  • Choosing blackout fabric without specifying a side-channel, light leaks down both edges.
  • Ordering wider than the recess to 'overlap', then finding the blind binds on the architrave.
  • Picking fabric by colour swatch alone, many fabrics behave entirely differently when backlit.

Our process

Five steps,
no surprises.

  1. 01

    In-home consultation

We bring the fabric library to your room. Hold samples against the light. Choose colours, textures and operation in the context of your own home.

  2. 02

    Precise measurement

Recess depth, reveal width, sill projection, radiator clearance, all recorded before you place the order.

  3. 03

    UK manufacture

Your roller blinds are cut, sewn and assembled in a UK manufacturing partner, typically within 10–14 working days.

  4. 04

    Clean installation

Brackets fixed into timber or with appropriate masonry anchors. Spring tension balanced. Operation tested on every blind before we leave.

  5. 05

    Aftercare guidance

Cleaning advice, warranty card, and a written quote for additional blinds if you decide to extend the order later.

Specification detail

The detail
most installers skip.

A roller blind is the sum of its components, fabric, tube, mechanism, brackets and bottom bar. Skimp on any one and the blind fails early.

Materials

Standard polyester fabrics

Wide colour range, soft drape, washable, the everyday choice for living rooms and bedrooms.

Blackout-coated fabrics

Polyester with a coated rear face that blocks 100% of light transmission. Pair with side-channels for total blackout.

Sheer / voile fabrics

Light-diffusing fabrics that maintain privacy by day while keeping the room bright.

PVC and wipe-clean fabrics

Moisture-resistant fabrics for kitchens and bathrooms, washable, mould-resistant, durable.

Flame-retardant fabrics

BS 5867 Part 2 Type B fabrics for commercial installations.

Methods & engineering

Spring-loaded operation

Pull-and-release, no chain, child-safe by design. Best for smaller blinds up to 1.5m wide.

Side-chain operation

Continuous tensioned chain for larger blinds. Always fitted with wall anchors to comply with BS EN 13120.

Cassette / fascia housing

Aluminium cassette concealing the tube for a finished, contemporary appearance.

Side-channel blackout

Slim aluminium channels at either side eliminate light leak around blackout blinds.

Variations we offer

  • Standard roller blind (open roll).
  • Cassette roller blind (concealed tube).
  • Day-and-night / vision blinds (alternating sheer and opaque stripes).
  • Twin / double rollers (two blinds on one bracket, blackout + voile).
  • Skylight roller blinds for Velux and similar roof windows.
  • Motorised / electric roller blinds (see Motorised Blinds & Shutters).

Where it applies

  • Bedrooms requiring full blackout for shift workers and young children.
  • Kitchens needing wipe-clean fabrics and short lead times.
  • Home offices where glare control matters more than total blackout.
  • Rental properties needing tidy, child-safe blinds between tenancies.
  • Conservatories with multiple windows requiring matching fabric runs.
  • Bathrooms where PVC-faced rollers outperform fabric alternatives.

Residential vs commercial

Residential roller blinds are chosen by fabric and feel. Commercial roller blinds in offices and schools must additionally meet BS 5867 Part 2 Type B flame-retardancy and BS EN 13120 child-safety, both standards we specify by default on commercial orders.
